Police Warn About New Phone Scam

Police Warn About New Phone Scam

January 27, 2017

A new scam warning was been popping up on social media reporting phone calls that are phishing for you to use the answer “YES” anywhere in the conversation. Once they get this response recorded they use it to authorize purchases on the Internet using your credit cards, which they probably already have collected information on.

I unknowingly fell prey to one of these calls yesterday. I was standing in the lot of an auto auction in St. Louis when my cell phone rang. I looked at the unknown number and usually would not have answered but it was from a city where one of my children live, so you never know if it is an emergency call. Anyway, I answered and the girl immediately said . “Oh hi, sorry I’m having trouble with my phone/headset can you hear me? . This is one of the main ways they can get you to say “Yes” and I fell for it. I was freezing to death and she started talking about me winning some prize. I then hung up.

This morning I opened Facebook and saw the following link:

Oh my gosh … it described my call to the tee. Under that link were several more: Snopes.com even has been alerted.

OK, So Now I have Fallen Prey to this scam. Now What Do I do?

Well, the first thing is to start monitoring my credit card websites to look for any unusual charges.
I may even notify my bank to ask for advise on what to do. After all, I’ve never been a victim before.

Everybody feel free to leave a comment and tell me what you would do.

According to an article in the Maui News, May 11, 2017 this scam is alive and well.
